Self-Ligating Brackets

Self-ligating brackets are orthodontic appliances that do not require metal or elastic ligatures to keep the archwire in place. Instead, the wire is placed using a small metal clip attached to the bracket. This means that there are no ligatures or ties that can potentially trap food and cause tooth decay and gum irritation. At Las Vegas Braces, Self-ligating brackets are also smaller and smoother than brackets with metal ligatures.

What Are Self-Ligating Braces Made Of?

Self-ligating braces are made from a heat-activated nickel-titanium wire, better known as “nitinol.” Self-ligating braces have clips that hold the wire in place. The clips hold the wire in place at all times, so these braces don’t require any rubber or metal ties to have the wire in place. Self-ligating braces are also smaller than traditional braces, so they take up less space in the mouth.

Self-Ligating Brackets and Oral Hygiene

Self-ligating brackets use a specialized clip in place of a rubber band to hold the archwire. These clips often allow for better oral hygiene since they can be cleaned with brushing and flossing.

When braces have rubber bands, food particles can get stuck in the bands. This can cause plaque buildup and eventually tooth decay. Our team can show patients how to brush and floss around brackets, but patients may still be at a higher risk for tooth decay.

Traditional metal braces require elastic ties to hold the archwire in place. These adjustable ties can become loose and rub against the gums and cheeks, irritating. Patients may also find that these elastic ties can discolor soft oral tissues. Self-ligating brackets eliminate the need for adjustable ties.

Are Self-Ligating Brackets Right for Me?

Self-ligating braces function in the same way as traditional braces. Brackets are bonded to each tooth, and a wire connects each bracket to move teeth into the correct position. However, self-ligating brackets do not require elastics or metal ties to hold the wire. Instead, they use a small door that closes over the wire to hold the wire in place. Self-ligating brackets are smaller and more comfortable than traditional brackets and do not require as many adjustments.
